Distinguished and Famous people from Greater South Hobart
๐ญ Peter Degraves
Engineer and businessman Peter Degraves arrived in Hobart in 1824 with his family and sawmilling equipment. His enterprises at the Cascades, on the lower slopes of kunanyi/Mount Wellington, developed from timber processing into brewing and other industries. He was also a major financial supporter of the Theatre Royal. The industrial and theatrical sides of his career left conspicuous marks on Hobart. His South Hobart connection centres on the Cascades site, where access to timber, water and machinery supported a developing colonial business.
